EAST INDIA

North-Eastern states
In these states you will find a lot of Tibetan handicrafts - painted scrolls, rugs, etc. The local items to be bought here are the hand woven woolen carpets, hand knit pure wool sweaters and caps, woven bags, exquisitely carved and painted tables called 'choksies', hand made dolls, painted masks, bamboo artifacts, and hand made paper. Sikkim also makes a local liqueur out of 'paan'( betel leaf). In Meghalaya, one can pick up the local dress called the 'jainsem', Chinese shoes and butterflies pressed in glass.

West Bengal
Terracotta, Bankura folk artifacts, painted clay and ceramics, bell metal, brass figurines, handloom silks and intricately carved jewellery are few of the wide range of products covered in a shopping tour of this state. Here one also finds the handicrafts of the north-eastern states.

Orissa
Applique work, carved figures in stones, paintings, tie and dye cottons and silks, shell work and wooden inlay are some of the traditional handicraft items available here. Bhubaneshwar is a good place to find most of these as well as the silk fabrics of Berhampur, the brass work of Ganjam, coir mats, carpets and handloom fabrics. In Puri one can buy carved stone figures.

Bihar
The best things to buy here are terrarcotta, 'Madhubani' paintings and patchwork wall hangings. The villages are also famous for stone pottery, bamboo artifacts, white metal statuettes applique work and wooden toys.
