Karnataka
With brass and copper temple carvings and figurines, sandalwood and rosewood items, wooden items with ivory inlay, stone carvings in granite, perfumes of jasmine, rose, sandalwood, musk and lavender, incense sticks, sandalwood oil soaps, silk saris, silverware and lacquerware to offer, Karnataka is a shopper's paradise. Bangalore in particular is a popular place to shop.
Tamil Nadu
Some of the things to buy here are gold and diamond jewellery and leather goods. Madras is famous for handloom fabrics, Kanchipuram for it's silk saris and Salem for it's carpets. In Madurai one finds shopping arcades in and around the temples offering replicas of the temples, tie-dye cotton saris and wooden toys. One can also buy eucalyptus oil and honey from Ooty. Tanjore is known for it's musical instruments, papier mache dolls and silk carpets. Miniature painting on leaf skeleton and inlaid brass works can be bought in Mahabalipuram.
Pondicherry
Marble printed silks, perfumes, incense sticks, handmade paper, papier mache, terracotta and plaster of Paris dolls, woven mats, handloom rugs, 'durries' and ceramics are made here and available locally.
Andhra Pradesh
Hyderabad is famous for it's pearls, precious stones, glass and lacquer bangles, filigree work. The other good buys in Andhra are the 'Kalamkari' printed fabrics and wall hangings, saris, ivory and horn products.
Kerala
Tie-dye works, miniature paintings on leaf skeletons, carvings on ivory, sandalwood, rosewood & white ceder products, coir articles, delicate gold jewellery, bell metal lamps and lace works are some of the good buys here.
Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Shell craft, shell jewellery, wood carvings, and tribal crafts are available in the markets and emporia.
